To increase performance and reduce operating costs of surface combatants, the United States Navy is beginning to incorporate composite structures aboard vessels. To realize both goals, adequate and proven repair techniques for these structures are necessary. To that end, a discussion of the general considerations for repairing composite materials structures aboard surface ships follows. The discussion visits material considerations, non-destructive evaluation methods, repair methodology, typical causes of damage, the repair environments, and some general examples of typical repairs.
