This paper contains the important points of a recent research project into Forward Collision Warning (FCW) by WS Atkins for Jaguar Cars. The aim of the project was to assess and analyse the performance of an FCW system (prior to the test track trials) using modelling and simulation. This can be called 'soft testing' and is very useful because of the problems involved in testing a system which is only required to work in emergency situations. A set of dynamically distinct accident scenarios has been produced. A scenario-based model of the FCW system has been designed to determine when the system will prevent collisions and when it will fail. Using the model, large numbers of simulations were performed to gain an understanding of how the system works and how successful it will be at preventing collisions. The end result of the project was a detailed knowledge of the possible envelope of operation of the FCW system.
