The WR-21 is the world's first modern advanced cycle gas turbine developed specifically for the naval marine market. The development and qualification programme has been a consummate example of International Government and Industry collaboration to deliver a product which is not only innovative in its technology, but also specifically targeted at meeting the real needs of today's and tomorrow's Navies. The WR-21 engine system comprises four main sub-systems: - the engine and enclosure module; - the freshwater / seawater heat exchanger; - the lubrication oil module; - the electronic engine controller. The WR-21 is an advanced cycle gas turbine based on components from the latest Rolls-Royce RB211 and Trent family of aero engines. This paper describes the technical features of the WR-21 system, concentrating on those elements which foster its unique efficiency characteristics. For these components the various test methods used to aid the design are detailed. The structure of the development test programme is described showing how it was structured to reduce risk and also how Navy requirements have been considered in specific elements of the test programme. The qualification strategy is discussed in detail and illustration is given of the way the testing is structured to address typical service operational issues. The paper concludes with a look at the immediate future for the WR-21 in naval operation, highlighting the operational benefits that have accrued from the integrated, collaborative approach to the development and qualification test programmes. The development programme for the WR-21 has now been completed and the efficiency benefits predicted for this advanced prime mover have been demonstrated. The system has now commenced qualification testing and has recently been selected as the prime mover for the Type 45 destroyer for the British Royal Navy.
