The Xiamen terminal stores and handles light petroleum products, heavy fuel oils and edible oils. Located between Zhuhai and Shanghai on China's south-east coast and across the Taiwan Strait from Taiwan, Xiamen was considered an excellent location because of its deep water, its status as a 'special economic zone' in China and because of the co-operation and support of local authorities. There are two main pump stations to transfer products from tank to tank or for loading vessels and road trucks. The main pipelines run from these pump stations to the jetty and truck loading racks. Most ship-loading is done by gravity, since the terminal is located approximately 25 m above sea level. The terminal has a central control room where the shift manager controls all operations. All main valves, tank measurements and temperatures, emergency stops, alarm panels, ship/shore communication and terminal communication are carried out from this room. The terminal employs 76 staff, most of them Chinese. Some of the staff have been trained in Holland and all operators are trained locally by a training officer from Paktank Oil Nederland. In May 1998, the company also received the ISO 9002 certificate from SGS Yarsley International Certification Services Ltd.
