Rollover detection is a very demanding automotive application due to the low cost requirements along wih the necessary high dynamic response. For this application angular rate sensors are superior to gravity based sensors because of the faster response and inherently smaller sensitivity to acceleration, which in most cases come along with an accident situation. Therefore a silicon micromachined gyroscope based on a tuning fork structure was developed with all resonant frequencies being above 10 kHz and the primary and secondary gyroscope oscillation frequency being close to 40 Hz. Additionally no other resonant frequencies are within a bandwidth of 10 kHz around the gyroscope modes. This guarantees the insensitivity against random vibrations or high acceleration inputs associated with vehicle maneuvring. A tuning fork angular rate sensor was developed on the basis of a complete electro-mechanical model including modal-analysis, simulated of the piezoelectrical actuation, the Coriolis-effect and the resulting piezoresistive electrical output. The resulting sensor is extremely robust against acceleration and vibration disturbances. The split AIN-electrode allows to apply a self-test signal for testing the sensor functioning and to calibrate the sensor sensitivity during operation without disturbing the angular rate measurement. This highly reliable sensor concept is specially suited for most automotive applications including rollover sensing. The MOS-compatible fabrication process guarantees a low-cost production.
