Alloys based on the gamma-TiAl phase (hereafter TiAl) can be thought of as intermediate between ceramics and heat-resistant alloys. The greatest merit of TiAl is its excellent high-temperature strength in spite of its light weight(density of 4 g/cm3) while its chief disadvantage is brittleness. The specific tensile strength (strength divided by density) of the developed TiAl with large additions of Nb and traces of other elements reaches 120 Mpa at 800 deg C and about 100 MPa at 900 deg C, more than for e.g. Inconel 713. Accordingly, a rotating component in which the applied stress is proportional to its weight is the most suitable application. Furthermore, in cases where weight reduction directly improves the equipment performance, eg. by reduction of the response time of the pressure increase in a turbocharger, the disadvantage of the brittleness of TiAl at lower temperatures should be compensated. This report describes the first commercial application of TiAl in a turbocharger for passenger vehicles.
