Due to the increase of world wide motorisation, almost everywhere legislation aims at reducing exhaust emissions of cars by means of lowering future limits for carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions. We have developed a MATLAB-SIMULINK based simulation tool FAHRSIM that allows to analyse various approaches to the reduction of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, both in conventional and alternative drivetrains. On the basis of car body characteristics (e.g. mass, gear box system and efficiency, rolling and air drag coefficient), engine data (M-n-characteristics with curves of stationary specific fuel consumption / efficiency) and storage data (batteries, flywheels, ...), conventionally driven, electric or hybrid electric vehicles can be examined regarding driving performance, fuel / energy consumption, pollutant emissions and control strategies.
