Vehicles (cars and lorries, tractors, construction and road machines, etc.) are the sources of excessive environmental noise. Nowadays noise value in an automobile cab might be considered as indicator of comfort level of the transportation. Vehicles are characterised by various sources of excessive noise therefore reduction of vehicle noise usually reaches by complicated noise reduction complexes cost up to 20 % of the whole vehicle. Further vehicle noise reduction and as consequence reduction of acoustical pollution in cities is still necessary and mostly is determined only by the economical factor. Installation of additional (more effective) noise control means onto a vehicle yields increase of the vehicle weight, additional fuel consumption and production cost enhancement. The following problems of vehicle acoustics are investigated by the authors: airborne sound radiation by complicates sources, sound reflection on finite size surfaces, sound diffraction on complex obstacles, sound transmission and scattering, generation of sound fields in small closed spaces, structure-borne sound radiation by complex sources, vibration propagation through complicated constructions. Approaches to applied tasks decision allowing elaboration of noise control complexes for vehicles at the design stage are worked out. Optimisation of noise control complexes for various types of vehicles by cost criteria are proposed by the authors based on the vehicle acoustic theory and modern mathematical optimisation approaches. Optimisation yields minimisation of noise control expenses providing required environmental noise level.
