This paper gives an overview of the analysis, design, and testing of a high speed axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) synchronous machine, which is mounted inside, and as an integral part of, a flywheel; this system will subsequently be used in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). For the 16000 rpm and 30 kW electric machine, several aspects on design, losses and thermal analysis are discussed in relation to the compact machine structure and the high efficiency requirements. The paper also describes the testing facility.
