In 1997 FORD decided to build a new powertrain test facility for manual transmission testing in Merkenich, Germany, based on the revolutionary 'Road to Rig' test strategy. Starting construction work in March 1998 the building was finished after only one year. The building of the new facility located in Merkenich. The building includes the following test rigs: chassis roller dynamometers (CR-Dynos) used to test the powertrain in complete vehicles, engine driven dynamometers (PT Dynos) to test the powertrain including the combustion engine, and electric driven transmission dynamometers (E-Dynos). The paper outlines the capabilities of the test systems at FORD and presents some aspects of implementing 'Road to Rig' test systems from the mechanical layout up to the functional integration of simulation into the development process.
