In space-to-earth links, where information in the form of voice channels or bits per second are being transmitted by analog or digital techniques, component sensitivity concepts must be replaced by system sensitivity concepts. This paper will introduce basic concepts of signal-to-noise ration in the overall transmission path, establishing the various contributions of loss and noise and leading toa the amount of digital and analog information from a given modulated carrier.
