During high speed braking, brake judder caused by thermal deformation of the brake disc rotors sometimes occurs. In order to determine the cause of this phenomenon, it is necessary to accurately measure transient temperature distribution. A system utilizing optical fibers, sensors and computers was developed to enable heat generated in the disc rotor to be visualized. Results showed that local heat spots are generated unevenly on the two surfaces of the rotor. From data thus obtained, thermal deformation of the disc rotor was determined by F.E.M. (Finite Element Method) simulation. The deformation was found to take the form of waving throughout the rotational dimension, uneven rotational expansion. Based on these findings recommendations for a new disc brake design were proposed.
