This paper describes the design for a remotely operated vehicle and accompanying support system for operations in 2500 meters of water. The system described is the Oceaneering International Dual Hydra 2500 currently in operation. The design areas include the surface handling system, main umbilical and vehicle tether cables, subsurface launch and retrieval garage, connectors and terminations, and the vehicle. Attention throughout the paper is given to those areas which are critical to the 2500 meter operational requirement. Specific areas which will be addressed are mechanical and fiber optic designs for the main umbilical cable and the neutral, oil-filled tether cable. The traction winch system will be discussed along with the design and decision criteria for the rejection of an approach incorporating a motion compensation system. All termination and connectors for the oil-filled pressure compensated electrical system will be discussed with other aspects of the vehicle and garage, which are unique to deep water operation. The fiber optic packaging and electronics system will be detailed and evaluated.
