The object of this paper is to report the new technologies which have brought about superior fuel economy and excellent steady-state and transient characteristics of the turbocharged diesel engine for heavy duty trucks. A new turbocharger with highly backward curved impeller which was named as Ultra Backward Curved Impeller (UBCI) and raked impeller which ensures a wide and sufficient flow range with excellent efficiency has been developed. In addition, for this engine, a chassis-mounted air to air intercooler, inertia charged air induction system, electronically controlled fuel injection timing device etc. have also been applied. In an actual road test, the new Hino truck which has newly developed aerodynamic cabin and equipped with this new engine showed an improved fuel consumption of about 20 to 30 % and better driveability than the predecessor.
