A full-scale testing program was conducted to verify a capability of large diameter pipeline to arrest ductile fracture under conditions typical of the Alaska Highway Gas Pipeline Project. Results of six full-scale tests indicated that, with some adjustment, the Battelle predictive mehodology could be extrapolated to these conditions. It was also confirmed that the region of intensive plastic deformation in front of the running crack, involves large enough volume, with correspondingly large energy component, to warrant its inclusion in any future, more comprehensive predictive model of ductile fracture arrest.
