The friction of carbon/carbon railway brake is variable. Friction coefficients between 0.08 and 0.7 were obtained during a single test. Transitions from low to high friction were sometimes abrupt, and were associated with certain defined temperatures at the asperities. An attempt has been made to relate these transitions to known hypotheses about the behaviour of graphites at various temperatures. (Wassmann)
