An initially laminar, planar wall jet was the subject of a study in which the wall length and jet velocity were varied. Flow visualization and hot wire surveys were carried out in the region preceding turbulent breakdown, in which unforced periodic velocity fluctuations associated with vortex generation in the shear layer were investigated. The results of the experiment exhibit important similarities to jets and other shear flows which have been previously investigated. (Kursetz)
