This study concerns modifications and evaluation of noise attenuating devices and methods for quieting diesel powered vehicles and construction equipment. The findings were used to develop guidelines for operation and correction of noisy vehicles and equipment and specifications for construction contracts. The major effort was directed towards modification of an existing 1964 diesel powered dump truck to bullg a 'Quieted Truck'. Changes to the exhaust system, cooling system and building a tunnel around the engine and drive train were successful in significantly reducina noise. The amount of reduction varied depending on factors such as sp-ed and mode of operation. As one example, an estimated reduction from 82 to 73 dBA was measured at 50 feet during an acceleration test at 50 mph. A literature survey and synthesis on diesel powered trucks and construction equipment are a part of this report.
