Since the probability of collisions always exist, adequate protection for the nuclear reactor is essential for nuclear powered ships. In the past, the design and analysis of the protection barrier was based on experiments and semi-empirical methods of analysis. Existing analytical methods are not accurate because of their deviation from the proper collapse theorems. This paper presents a mathematical model developed for the United States Maritime Administration for the analysis and design of the protection barrier based on the collapse theorems and finite element methods, and al design procedure to ensure the safety of nuclear ships in collisions. Model test correlation with this mathematical model is also discussed. (Se)
