The primary objective of the Build-To-Print Composite Slat program was to assess the maturity of the subcontract aircraft industry to fabricate composite components from documented engineering data. In a contract with the Air Force Materials Laboratory (F33615-76-C-5427), the Avco Aerostructures Division produced one B-1, No. 3, Left Hand Slat to a design developed by the Lockheed-Georgia Company. Phase I of the programm was devoted to tooling manufacture and the production and test of two reduced length components. Phase 2 covered full length slat fabrication, a static structural test and a cost estimate projected to a hypothetical production schedule. (Kursetz)
