A new method to improve the flutter characteristics of the cascade is developed. It is confirmed in both theory and experiment that, by changing the elastic nature of the neighbouring blades, the flutter velocity is increased greatly compared with the case of uniform elastic nature. Non-uniformity of natural frequency suppresses the aerodynamic coupling between adjacent blades and delays the occurrence of flutter. Though too much discrepancy of natural frequency of course diminishes the merit, an increment of natural frequency ratio of neighbouring blades up to some value (eg. 1.2-1.3) makes the flutter velocity higher conspicuously. If both ratios of mass and natural frequency of the neighbouring blades are changed at the same time, the more merits are gained than in case of changing either ratio only. (DePo)
