This paper describes the steps followed in optimizing the design of an automotive engine control system. Adjustment of design parameters allows the control to be adapted to a particular engine, but the complexity of system interactions may limit the designer's ability to achieve optimum performance by intuitive feel alone. The system may be represented in the design process by an analytical model, a computer simulation, or indeed may be the actual engine hardware. Three techniques of parameter optimization are described, two of which have intuitive justification. The design approach is applied to the calibration of an electronic fuel injection and ignition control system. (Kursetz)
