The purpose of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of a transmission system necessary for automotive and transit propulsion in conjunction with a flywheel. The necessary characteristics, and especially the required efficiency of the transmission system are presented. It is demonstrated that the efficiency need only be good for certain combinations of torque and speed. The areas where high efficiency is required are dependent upon the driving cycle. The ones used as examples are the EPA standard driving cycles for automobiles. Four separate transmission configurations are presented and discussed. (DePo)
