The introductory stages in the development of a simulation test, aimed at reproducing in the laboratory the correct dynamic response of a heavy goods vehicle chassis to a variety of road surface excitations, are discussed. The test will provide the engineer with more realistic information on the vibration and fatigue characteristics of a chassis at a much earlier stage in the design evaluation period than is now possible. Measurement of the dynamic response of a typical chassis structure when the complete vehicle is subjected to simulated road displacement inputs using a large road simulator facility is discussed and a technique for describing the motion of the chassis by means of a frequency response analysis is proposed.
