By relieving the dispatcher of clerical work and automatically setting up routine crossings of trains on single track, computer-aided dispatching makes it possible for one control centre to supervise several thousand route-km in North America. Just over the horizon are advanced train control systems that will integrate the driving and dispatching functions, reducing accidents and delays while saving fuel.
