The Kalman filter is widely accepted as the approach of choice in integrating multisensor systems in aerospace applications. Although it is common practice to use the term 'Kalman filter', it is understood that what is meant is an embodiment of an approach to recursive estimation started by Kalman but enhanced by many man-years of activity in the aerospace community. The evolution and the application of the Kalman filter in the aerospace arena is traced. Refinements have taken three distinct avenues of emphasis: theoretical formulations, design techniques, and numerical enhancements. These efforts brought the fundamental ideas presented by Kalman to the point where actual application was possible.
