It is planned to cut over the New Railway Telephone Service for the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen in 1982. The railway telephone service for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen is provided on the basis of operator-assisted service in both terminating and originating calls, whose area is limited to cities along the line. In order to cope with the demand for improvement, the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen is going to employ automated connection for originating calls from the train and extend the service area throughout the country.
