National Airlines is protecting its vital passenger reservation system against failure more reliably than ever before. At the same time, the airline is shaving 50 percent off data capture times by using a new magnetic tape system which operates at twice the density of the previously used tape drives. The National Airlines' computer center processes as many as 1,200,000 reservation-connected messages daily from across the country and from cities it serves in Europe. During peak periods as many as 40 requests per second come in from National's ticket agents or independent travel agents.
