To counteract the projected enemy threat of the future battlefield, increased automation is believed essential. The key to successful use of automation on the battlefield is survivability. Many agree this is contingent on increased standardization in military computer hardware and software. While industry and government acknowledge that some standardization is essential, the questions of what, where and how to standardize remain. The Military Computer Family is a program for computer system standardization for battlefield automation. This article explores the issue of hardware standardization with specific attention given to level of hardware standardization.
