Describes an investigation designed to determine the feasability of radar surveillance of large sea areas from the air or from space for meteorological, pollution control, or shipping control purposes. The SLAR (side-looking airborne radar) system is used (synthetic aperture radar, in the case of satellite-based systems). Research is in progress to establish the optimum dimensioning of the equipment and to fit it into a comprehensive surveillance system.
