With a 60000 km network moving a large proportion of the country's passenger and freight traffic, establishment of a reliable telecommunications system has been a vital part of Indian Railway's modernisation plans. Introduction of VHF radio between some important centres in the early 1960s paved the way for development of multi-channel radio communication for data and speech transmission, and more than 10000 route-km of microwave links are now in operation. Current plans envisage a further 15000 route-km.
