Graphs and histograms illustrate the decline and growth in types of traffic in West Germany for the period 1950-1973. Against this background new designs of high speed locomotive for rail transport by A.E.G. are described. The 151 series locomotive has six driven axles each with an a.c. motor of 1090 kW, controlled by anti-parallel connected thyristors. Series 184 is a four current system for d.c. motors with a rectified a.c. power supply and a thyristor control circuit. Trainset 403 for fast inter-city travel has four carriages each with four driven axles and is capable of over 200 km/hr. A trainset for the Munich city system has 2400 kW motors, 18 ton tractive effort and a 1 m/sq.sec acceleration. A recent linear motor development outlined is based on the 1971 prototype for Krauss-Maffei. Some circuit details are given for D-train air conditioning.
