The authors have developed a new magnetic levitation system, which is a completely contactless material transportation system without any power collecting device. This paper describes attractive force characteristics for a hybrid magnet, which is composed of a permanent magnet and electromagnets. Also, the newly developed electromagnet control system, which eliminates power collecting devices from the electromagnetically levitated vehicle, is described precisely. A new concept for an electromagnetic levitation system has been proposed. Test results have been obtained using a small scale material transportation system, designed to transport materials weighing up to 4 kg. A remarkable feature of this system is that materials are transported completely without any mechanical contact between the vehicle and ground facilities. Therefore, there are no dust and noise at all while the vehicle travels. This extraordinary feature can realize an automatic material transportation system, even in a super clean room of cleanness class under ten. According to test results, power dissipation in the electromagnets and the control circuits was less than 5 watts for a levitating vehicle weighing about 11 kg. Over half of this wattage was dissipated in the reflecting optical gap sensors. This fact shows that the new electromagnetic levitation technology, without any power collecting device, has actually been established. Although this paper treats only a small scale system, this technology is applicable to a larger system such as a passenger transportation system.
