Radar images of a single scene were obtained at several different incident angles (i.e., at several different illumination angles) by the SIR-B synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The best multi-incidence angle image set was obtained from a region in South America (primarily in Argentina) called the Rio Pico site. These images have been evaluated to determine the combination of illumination angles which best enhances human perception of a three-dimensional stereo model of a particular type of terrain. Simulated radar imagery has proven useful in defining the best combination of illumination angles for stereo viewing from a spaceborne SAR. Evaluation of the SIR-B images is an attempt to validate, or disprove results obtained using simulated images, but the data set acquired by the SIR-B is insufficient to accomplish this. The best that can be attempted is a comparison based upon a few isolated angles.
