This paper gives the results of an analysis of the accuracy of several centroid estimation algorithms for automatic aircraft landing systems. The algorithms were tested by using actual radar scans to estimate the aircraft position, and then comparing this estimated position to the actual aircraft position as determined by an optical triangulation system. The algorithm that resulted in the minimum estimation mean-square errors, determined statistically, is the 12 dB threshold method preceded by a matched filter. Replacing the matched filter with either the two-pole filter or the five-point moving average filter results in somewhat larger errors.
