A brief recitation of some of the more common electronic-based features in current vehicles gives some indication of the complexities we are dealing with. Electronic Powertrain Controls, Instrument Clusters, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning Controls, Entertainment Systems, Theft Deterrence and power assist options such as seat, doors, mirrors and load leveling are commonplace on many vehicles. Top-of-the-line vehicles are now adopting Skid Control, Interior Lighting Control, Exterior Lighting Control, Cellular Communications, and Navigation, accompanied by even more sophisticated Graphic Display Systems. It is clear that the amount of wiring that would be required to handle the power and signal lines for this much equipment has become prohibitive from the space, cost and reliability aspects if handled in a conventional manner.
