The aim of this paper is to discuss the applicability of classical expert systems techniques to planning problems in naval operational command and control, to highlight the shortcomings found in the man-machine interaction of these techniques and to make recommendations with regard to the improvements that can be made to such systems by using database, algorithmic and graphics interfaces. An outline of the total system is given in order to provide a context for the remainder of the discussion.
