The objective of this paper was to examine the role of infrastructure in the market introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles. It is important to realize that the future of market introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles depends on the development and operation of an efficient infrastructure. An efficient infrastructure must include a product-related component, an institution-related component, and a function-related component. If these components are not part of the infrastructure, the infrastructure will not be able to facilitate the flow of the product from the manufacturer to the consumer. It is equally important to realize that, under some conditions, elements of the infrastructure must be stimulated by the government interested in market introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles or it must be stimulated by the manufacturers of the vehicles. Only when the product is accepted by the business environment, the market, and the society is it possible to rely on the profit motives of the institutions that make up the infrastructure to take an active part in its development. It appears that in those markets where government is actively involved in the development of the infrastructure, the development and market introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles is progressing faster than in those markets where government support is missing.
