The art of multisensor fusion and correlation in a tactical environment

The field of multisensor correlation can be divided into four major areas: Correlation - This is the process that compares and fuses inputs from different sensor sources that pertain to the same entity type (i.e., radars). Upward Aggregation - This is the process by which a lower level element (i.e., radio) is linked to a higher level element. Downward Aggregation - This is the process by which higher level elements are linked to lower level elements. Clustering Aggregation - This is the process by which different entities, by area, are checked to determine if their combined presence is the composition of a higher level element. Only when all four of the processes are automated and are dynamically changing in real time can full use be made of multisensor data. This allows the user to see not only the elements on the battlefield but also their relationships to each other. The purpose of this paper is to present the state of the art in this entire area. Where we have been, where we are and where we are going shall all be addressed.
