Over the past few years reinforced plastics and composites have been successfully applied by automotive engineers to reduce product weight by replacing steel materials. Unfortunately, these unmodified lightweight structural materials are not able to shield against radio frequency interference (RFI) emissions in front end applications. There are many types of different methods to shield against incoming EMI and to reduce spurious emissions from within non conductive housings. Simply, the methods usually involve active conductive ingredients such as aluminum, nickel, silver, zinc, iron and carbon. These conductive ingredients are applied as: 1) grounded metal-foil shields, 2) bulk conductor-filler materials, 3) integral conductive-material layers or 4) conductive paints or platings.
