General Dynamics has developed a Software Engineering System (SES) incorporating modern software engineering tools to support the generation of embedded computer software throughout the software life cycle. The promises, problems and payoffs of tool use are presented. The resulting system applies a minicomputer as the primary user interface and configuration control site, allows software tools to be hosted on mainframe computers, and links generated software directly to the embedded target computers on which it will execute. The rationale, system architecture and several of the specific tools are described as they apply to the development of software for avionics systems.
