The design of a high performance arc heater is progressing from an art to a science. Optimization of performance is requiring identification and understanding of the critical flow phenomena that control arc stability and enthalpy-pressure characteristics. A transition from a simple energy-balance bulk enthalpy to a well-defined core-flow enthalpy is developing. This paper describes some of the advanced techniques used in arc heater design, and validates these techniques using state-of-the-art data. Emphasis is placed on the design of the MDRL HIPERARC, but other designs are also discussed. Use of the MDRL SWIRL ARC computer code is discussed, and comparisons with data are presented.
