Analytical procedures, design standards, and manufacturing methods have evolved to produce platforms for the Gulf of Mexico to ana cceptable standard of safety, at an economical cost. There are indications from the North Sea platforms already installed that the existing offshore experience must be extended to incorporate more advanced analysis techniques, materials and manufacturing requirements to cover the more severe environmental conditions. A major item of classification/certification is a meaningful independent design appraisal.
