The uncertainty involved in designing for thef orce experienced by North Sea platform structures, and awareness of environmental hazards are reflected in extremely stringent material specifications. The British Steel Corporation has been involved in the supply of steel for fixed offshore production platforms and for high strength line pipe for the North Sea. The properties of some of the higher strength quality steels currently available indicate their suitability for such service. Particular attention has been paid to the value of controlling sulphur and carbon equivalent (CE) levels. For pipe line steels the use of rare earth metal treatment has been demonstrated.
