In 1964, the Welding Institute was engaged by the Military Vehicles and Engineering Establisment (MVEE) to develop a welding set, which could handle a wide variety of materials, suitable for repairing field equipment. After research into the welding parameters for the different thicknesses and welding positions for each material. The Welding Institute constructed a prototype MIG equipment. The information was used to design the equipment, which, once constructed, required only a programme card with switched settings to allow final adjustments to be made. Welding trials could be confined to a few critical joints for each materials after the principles had been established.
