Recent changes in regulations have allowed the introduction of higher productivity B‐double medium combination vehicles in Australia. They have the potential to significantly reduce distribution costs, especially for bulk commodities like petroleum products. This paper reviews the experience of Mobil Oil Australia Limited with the use of B‐doubles. Technological and operating practices used by Mobil are reviewed. Comparisons between B‐doubles and other vehicle types are examined. The productivity benefits necessary to justify the higher capital cost of B‐doubles are detailed. Finally, Mobil's programme of tare mass reduction, applicable to all tankers in its Australian fleet, are outlined and benefits described.
