Fuzzy reliability, considering the fuzziness in loads and rigidity, is used to assess the strength of single-hull tankers. The performance function in the reliability method, based on the ultimate strength of a ship’s hull girder, is evaluated by means of the first-order second-moment method. A triangular fuzzy membership function is applied to get approximate solutions that have generally wider interval containing the exact ranges. Two tankers, one made of mild steel and one made of high-tensile steel, are examined to show the influence of high-tensile steels on fuzzy reliability of ship hull girder. The results of this study may be used in reliability-based design or the development of reliability- based design criteria.
