In 2010 Virgin Galactic will commence suborbital operations, setting the stage for commercial manned spaceflight (Figure 10.1). Although flights to the Moon represent a whole different order of magnitude than suborbital, or even orbital flight, the flights of Virgin Galactic will represent a new impetus for space tourism. In the 21st century, thousands of wealthy tourists pay tens of thousands of dollars to climb Mount Everest, dive cave systems, and ski across the Arctic. Tourism is a proven market and one that will inevitably result in trips to the Moon, as evidenced by the fact that it is already possible to buy a ticket!
