Summary ARRoW has been evaluated in the framework of SNCF’s LECAV project. The aim of the LECAV is to characterize the acoustic condition of the railway network in different ways: to provide a map of the track roughness for the entire railway network; to monitor the acoustic performance of the track for the grinding policy; and to easily identify and locate possible TSI-compliant measurement locations. For this task, ARRoW was tested along other onboard measurement systems. More specifically, ARRoW was used to provide rail roughness levels and spectra during a 2,000 km measurement campaign. A global network map of the roughness was delivered, and, in addition, more detailed results were obtained at some test and reference sites that were measured multiple times to check the repeatability and representativeness of the ARRoW results compared to direct roughness measurement results. ARRoW proved to live up to the task. However, to get the most out of the system, attention should be paid to the selection of calibration sites and maintaining a low wheel roughness.
