Abstract Autonomous mobile robot navigation has been regarded as a popular research area for quite sometimes now, which has still several open problems. There have been many attempts to solve the problems related to mobile robot navigation in both map-based and mapless environments [1–9]. In mobile robot navigation , simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technique has also been popularly researched and several probable solutions to the problem have been proposed by the researchers [5, 6].
